He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He went through public schools there, and then graduated from Suffolk University in Boston with a degree in journalism. He went on to graduate school at Emerson College earning a degree in filmmaking. He then worked in corporate public relations for the General Electric Company before leaving to write full-time.

The vast majority of Mack’s work has been in military fiction. However, because several of his highly popular novels deal with the military and UFOs, when he approached his editor about writing a nonfiction book on the topic, he got the immediate go ahead.

Mack gathered a mountain of information from many sources and spoke with some highly acclaimed UFO researchers including Jerry Clark, Keith Chester, Richard Haines, and Stan Gordon. He also spoke with a number of contacts in the U.S. military and people connected with U.S. intelligence services. It took about two years to distill all this information down to a collection of about 70 episodes detailing military encounters with UFOs from 1909 up to the first Gulf War. That’s what makes up “UFOs in Wartime – What They Didn’t Want You To Know.”

www.mackmaloney.com

This interview originally aired December 16th, 2011:

Listen to internet radio with AfterDark Radio on Blog Talk Radio

Hologram Rock Stars

What would you say if I told you thousands of people in Japan, and California, attended a rock concert where the star was a seven-foot tall anime character? This is what Brian has to say: This is the aftermath of a pretty brutal thunderstorm in Fort Worth Texas on May 10, 2011. It was taken from my balcony on the 34th floor of a building in Fort Worth. Though I thought we were at war or was terrorism, it was a massive series of downed 12,470 volt power lines. As I took it with my 70-200 2.8L IS lens, it is farther away than it looks. (it is 5 miles away) That is why there are not explosion sounds. This was a very well documented event. I was on my balcony to take lightning pictures (Yes, not smart) and this started happening in front of me. I turned my camera (Canon 5d MkII) to video mode and let it roll.

London Calling ~ Part One

My mother discusses her childhood during WW2 in London, England.

Psychic Gambler

Robert E. This is Czechoslovakia's first science fiction film. Made in 1963, the movie takes place in the year 2163 and tells the story of Starship Ikaria XB 1's voyage to Alpha Centari. ("Voyage" was the savagely cut, English dubbed version released by American International Pictures.)

In this remarkable scene, the explorers enter a derelict 20th Century space craft littered with evidence of elitist immorality. The visuals are striking. Vacuum preserved corpses dressed in tuxedo and evening gowns who died in the middle of gambling and partying. The crew killed by their own chemical hand-weapons as they fought over dwindling oxygen. The ship laden with nuclear weapons---still active after centuries.

Ikarie XB 1 is an ambitious, thoughtful, intelligent film decades ahead of its time. It's an ultra-rare "must-see" for any serious SF fan. The film has high-concept elements galore: a trip to proxima centaura; time dilation; future foods, fashion, music and dance; first-contact protocols; increased longevity; artificial intelligence; bulky socialist robots.

It's said the screenplay was inspired by the work of Stanislaw Lem, including "The Magellanic Cloud" from 1955. Mr. Gernon is the only person in the world to witness what creates the Bermuda Triangle. Others have seen parts of this phenomenon and some have seen it but vanished. Gernon is the only one to see this from its birth stage through its mature stage and enter the heart of the Timestorm and escape through a Tunnel Vortex and experience a time warp of 30 minutes forward in time and 100 miles forward in space.

After 31 years of research Gernon discovered how he had flown those 100 miles in such a short time and never seen the Earth or sky around him. He was captured by what he calls Electronic Fog. There are dozens of planes and boats that have been in this fog through out history. And there are dozens more that have crashed because it can induce spatial disorientation. Many have disappeared and some have even disintegrated. All of the people that have been in this fog thought they were traveling THROUGH the fog. Until Gernon’s theory, no one ever realized it is similar to Saint Elmo’s Fire; it attaches itself to the vessel and travels WITH it.

What we learn from intrepid adventures like Christopher Columbus, Charles Lindbergh, and Bruce Gernon-the co-author of THE FOG-who survived frightening encounters in the Triangle and lived to tell the tale?

THE FOG presents pilot Bruce Gernon’s groundbreaking new theory of the Bermuda Triangle, based upon his own firsthand experiences, eyewitness reports from other close-call Triangle survivors, and leading scientific research.

But the notorious Bermuda Triangle hasn’t given up all its secrets. THE FOG also explores the Triangle’s connection to UFOs, a secret navy base, and a possible link to a vanished ancient civilization. www.electronicfog.com

Listen to internet radio with AfterDark Radio on Blog Talk Radio

"Undercity" Exploring New York City's Tunnels

My guest tonight is STEVEN DUNCAN. Mr. Duncan is an urban historian & photographer. “Undercity” is a mini documentary made by Mr. Duncan and videographer Andrew Wonder about exploring NYC subway and train tunnels and climbing bridges. Their adventures were recently featured in the New York Times and on NPR. In Steve Duncan's own words: "I try to peel back the layers of a city to see what's underneath. From the tops of bridges to the depths of sewer tunnels, these explorations of the urban environment help me puzzle together the interconnected, multi-dimensional history and complexity of the great metropolises of the world." www.undercity.org

They're hoping the artificial reef will attract tourists and give the natural reefs a break. I guess, aesthetically, it looks better than dumping old tires and abandoned subway cars in the water. However, the sight of people standing like frozen souls on the seafloor---covered in algae with little fishes chewing on the faces---looks more like a ghostly apparition of a sunken ship. Birds falling from the sky in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Sweden, and Canada. In Italy, a thousand turtle doves fell from the sky and all had a strange blue stain on their beaks. The explanation for the bird deaths has ranged from fireworks, thunderstorms, flying into invisible UFOs (that's a good one), and disease. As for the turtle doves, Rodolfo Ridolfi, a director at the regional zoological institute, said: We are fairly confident the birds died as a result of massive indigestion brought on by over-eating. The most likely cause are discarded sunflower seeds that were found on an industrial estate close to where the bodies of the turtle doves were found.

In essence the birds were greedy, ate too many of the seeds - which we have found inside them during autopsies - and this brought on the indigestion that led to their death.

An upset stomach killed them? OK. Where did the blue stain on their beaks come from? Blue-dyed M&Ms?

How about a river turning bright neon-green? This story is from Canada:

Horrified nature-lovers at Goldstream Provincial Park watched as the Goldstream River turned bright green late Wednesday afternoon.

The fluorescent green colouring appeared to start about 500 metres on the Victoria side of the entrance to the park and, over the course of an hour, the substance flowed down into the environmentally sensitive estuary.

By 5:30 p.m. the river, known for its dramatic salmon runs, eagles and other wildlife, was back to its normal colour.

Ministry of Environment teams were immediately sent to the area to investigate and members of Langford Fire Department collected samples for analysis.

No dead fish or animals had been found by early evening.

Earlier in the day a fountain beside Veterans Memorial Parkway in Langford also turned bright green, said Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett.

The fountain turned green, too? Is it hooked up to the river? What's the connection? Duh.

Anyway, Canada’s Pacific Environmental Science Centre in North Vancouver tested the water from the river and the fountain and it turned out to be fluorescein. This is a chemical used to trace leaks from septic tanks and water systems.

I love the way the article says it's not toxic, and then goes on to say: Fluorescein is also used in medical diagnosis and guidelines warn it can cause reactions ranging from nausea and hives to death from anaphylactic shock.

Not So Angelic

I don't know why this video is entitled "Fallen Angel," there's nothing angelic about it. They combined the energetics of a high-astral level cat-like being called the Ari with the DNA of human and lions. The purpose of the cat was to spy on humans. In Ancient Egypt, every household was given a cat. At night, the cat would sneak off to report to their alien controllers. And that's why even today the cat instinctively wants to go out at night, although it no longer has anyone to report to. Hmmm. I wonder what my cats would say about me?

Underneath Lake Titicaca are two cities. One is directly on the bottom of the Lake, and the other is a subterranean city. At night, if you look directly at the Lake you'll see lights, like fast moving vehicles, under the water.

In the Andes, weird things happen to people.

Stewart continues with his story of Bolivia: Later that night, back in the City (La Paz), I was in my hotel room. I woke up in the middle of the night and saw at my window, inside my room, a woman with a cat-like face. She pointed outside the window, and then disappeared. The next day, the archeologist stopped by my room and told me a story about some European back-packers who had gone up to the Andes. One of the travelers went behind a rock to relieve himself. Suddenly an apparition of a head & torso of a woman with a cat-like face appeared. It is believed these beings come from under the lakes and mountains of the Andes.

In the Andes Mountains, Peru, some where between 15,000 to 20,000 feet elevation, a German mountain climber found a 11-year boy frozen in the snow. He thought the child was lost and he lifted him in his arms and carried him down to a cave where he was camping for the night.

In the cave, the child began to defrost, and as he thawed a drop of blood came out of his ear, indicating he was still alive and breathing. But, unfortunately, the elevation drop and the sudden and rapid unfreezing of the body resulted in the child's death.

That child was an Inca who had been up in the mountains for several hundred years. And since then, three other Inca children in the Andes region had been found in the same condition. The Incas had put them in a state of suspended animation for all those years to be guardians, or an energetic anchor, for that particular location.

In South America, there are so many secrets yet to be revealed.

New Book

Yeah, I know. I haven't written a new blog in a few weeks. I've been so absorbed in writing my second book I haven't noticed time. But, I'm on a roll. It's part one in a trilogy, a science-fiction thriller, and the title is---drum roll---nah, I'm gonna keep it a secret.

One of the things I love about writing is the research. I always learn some interesting tidbits. Did you know there's a tunnel under the Great Pyramid that extends all the way to Tibet?

The Tibetans speak of tunnels lit by a strange green fluorescence where plants thrive and prolongs human life. And that these tunnels were built by giants "when the world was young" and travel under the Pacific Ocean to the Andes in South America.

Speaking of South America. I heard Stewart Swerdlow tell an interesting story about his visit to La Paz, Bolivia. He had been invited down to Bolivia by a national archeologist. When he arrived there, Stewart was presented with a letter signed by government officials authorizing him to a site in Tiwanaku to do research on an underground chamber that was found there. Tiwanaku is on the shore of Lake Titicaca, located on the border of Peru & Bolivia. The archeologist explained to Stewart that in 1981, he & a group of other archeologists, accidently found an opening inside a mountain on the shores of Lake Titicaca. They entered and walked down a long tunnel. There was a foul odor inside, but they continued on & discovered a large chamber. Inside the chamber, they put their lights on and saw laying on a stone platform a 9-foot tall cyclops in suspended animation. And, surrounding the room on all four walls was what we'd call computer equipment. Then suddenly, the archeologists were overcome with a sensation of choking, and they left the tunnel. They covered the entrance, & informed the Bolivian government of the discovery. The government, who at that time was a dictatorship, immediately bull-dozered the entrance to prevent any further access to the chamber.

Now, 28-years later, after all the documents had been destroyed, the archeologists had a general idea of the tunnel's location, but had forgotten the exact spot. So, this is where Stewart stepped in. His job was to use his clairvoyant abilities to find the entrance. He was successful, and the chamber has been found again. He also discovered there was more than one entrance, and there's actually a sierra of mountains that rings Lake Titicaca & the city of Tiwanaku filled with many tunnels & chambers containing 15,000-year-old computers protected by cyclops. It's believed the cyclops aren't natural, but a genetically created being to guard these locations in those ancient times.

In order to activate the computer system---which wasn't electronic---you had to use tone. If you emit the right tone, it activates. The wrong tone, it kills you.

Adventures like these fascinate me. It gives me ideas for stories. Now, excuse me, while I get back to writing my book. ~ AA

Look! Those old fashion ufos were big. They were detailed. Elaborate. Ornate. Sometimes they looked like wedding cakes, or two plates stuck together. They hovered 10 feet over your head and shot laser beams at your cows. They landed in your front yard, and the 'aliens' would pose for the camera.

What do we get now? I was there.

I know, it's hard to imagine somebody as cool and as non-geeky like myself would go to a Star Trek Convention. Well, it was 1972, I was very young, and I went with my sister, Jill, my brother, Mark, and my Mom (Mom had a secret crush on DeForest Kelley). The convention was held in the second floor ballroom of the Staler-Hilton Hotel, on a cold weekend in January.

My family and I jumped on the subway and breathlessly raced down to the westside of Manhattan. At the hotel, the convention staff stamped our hand with an ink 'tatoo' and we rode the escalator to the second-floor ballroom. The place was packed. An unexpected party-pooper, the fire marshall of the FDNY, announced it was over capacity, and thus a fire hazard, and some people would have to leave. The FDNY proceeded to kick people out, and a small riot broke out. Meanwhile, in the confusion of the combative crowd, I ran into a school friend of mine. We both had our 35mm Pentax SLR cameras around our necks. He and I stood at the top of the escalator and watched a fireman trying to single-handedly control a bunch of angry Trekkies in the lobby. "A riot always makes a good shot," he said, as he snapped picture after picture of flailing arms and bulging eyeballs in the crowd.

Once the riot had subsided, it was time to enjoy the convention. There were a few tables selling Star Trek memorabilia scattered around the room. My mother complained it was mostly junk, but yet she still bought a pair of rubber Spock ears. And she was right, it was junk. The damn Spock ears were impossible to get over your ears. There were people walking around dressed in full make-up and costume of various alien characters from the TV show.

At some point, the stars of Star Trek made an appearance for their fans. In the ballroom, on a stage, Nichele Nichols, who played Ahora, walked out in a floor length evening gown. She spoke for a little while, and then DeForest Kelley (Dr McCoy), George Takei, James Doohan (Scotty) came out. Kelley had laryngitis, and a fan gave him a cough drop. The last star on the stage was William Shatner. He talked about growing up in Canada, and how he started off as a stage actor in Shakespearean plays. For the next 30-minutes, the cast answered questions from the audience, and that was that.

Next, my mother, sister, brother, and I separated to check out various venues at the convention. My mother wandered into a room where a man was giving a lecture on the Klingon Empire. He gave a power-point presentation of the Klingons space ships, pointing out the engine room, command center, etc. Then he went on to discuss the proper pronunciation of the Klingon language. When my mother came out of the lecture room, she rolled her eyes, and said, "Geez, he was talking about the Klingons like they really exist."

In another room, a very famous science-fiction writer (who shall remain nameless) who had written one of the Star Trek episodes, was giving a talk to a small crowd. Suddenly, a man in the audience began to heckle the writer. This lead into a war of words. The writer angrily said, "Don't think because I'm wearing a turtleneck sweater that I won't come down there and kick your ass."

I don't remember how long I was at the convention, but I stayed 'til the end. The event was wrapped up with a encore appearance of the Star Trek cast. The crowd had dwindled, and only a few fans remained behind. We all sat crossed-leg on the ballroom floor. Suddenly, the MC on the stage pointed over my head and said, "We have Candice Bergen in the audience." Everyone turned their heads to look in my direction, and I turned around, too, and sitting directly behind me was the actress Candice Bergen. She was holding a Nikon SLR camera, and looked very embarrassed to be recognized.

I can still remember some of the audience's questions. One young man asked Shatner "Will there be gay people in space?" And Shatner gave a politically-correct polite answer. Then someone asked Shatner if he had enjoyed himself at the convention. Well, he cleared his throat and commented on how rude and hostile everyone had been. He added, even the people asking him questions had a chip-on-their shoulders (I have to agree with Shatner, it was a rough crowd).

And on that note, the first Star Trek Convention came to a close.

Were you at the 1972 Star Trek Convention? If so, what were your experiences?

Curly Top

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 269px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2FtAUoku5DE/THJ-9CMPDOI/AAAAAAAAADw/yey1bQ1TBRk/s400/mom+and+vic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508604881252846818" />

It's hard to believe I took this photo almost forty years ago. As part of the story I photographed the candidates at home with their family. I can't remember the woman's name in the photo, I know she was an engineer. There were four women in the Space Shuttle Astronaut Training Program. However, when the first shuttle flew---after several years of delay---these women were not part of the crew. I have more photos from NASA, and if I ever get my darkroom set up again, I'll post those photos, too.

Elyse

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 219px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2FtAUoku5DE/S3dFB5b3FaI/AAAAAAAAADY/uEwC_g0jebc/s320/Elyse_NEW.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437890973973026210" />

This is a photo of my sister's neighborhood friend, Elyse. Her name was Sinead.

Aleta Watches Me Watching Her

June 2008 in Key West, Florida: This was the first time I used my Nikon digital camera. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association (Aug 4th), they found a 5% rise of PTSD in the approximate 50,000 people first surveyed in 2006 and 2007. Originally, their study found PTSD was 14% amongst the people they surveyed, but when participants were re-evaluated in 2008, the number had risen to 19%. One reason for the increase was, 9.5% didn't report symptoms in the earlier survey.

Between 2003 and 2004, The New York City Health Department examined PTSD in 11,000 lower Manhattan residents who lived near the site of the WTC disaster. Their study revealed that 12.6% of the people surveyed suffer from PTSD. Also, women were more likely to have PTSD at 15%, compared to 10% of the men. The report then broke down the participants between race and income, stating 1 in 5 African-American, 1 in 4 Hispanics, suffered PTSD, compared to 10.7% of white residents. And people with an annual income less than $25,000 showed a 20% rate.

Also, in 2003-2004, the World Trade Center Health Registry surveyed 30,000 rescue and recovery workers. This group consisted of police, firefighters, and volunteers. According to this study, the reported cases of PTSD was: 21.2% volunteer workers, firefighters 12.2%, and police officers, at 6.2% (personally, I believe PTSD amongst cops are higher than this number. But because of the stigma attached to mental health issues within the NYPD, cops are less likely to report such problems).

Also, the recent Journal of the American Medical Association found the cases of asthma in people surveyed who didn't have the illness prior to 9/11 was now 10.2% of civilians and 20.5% of rescue and recovery workers, and that asthma was the highest in residents living near the WTC site. Another health study from the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine reported doctors from World Trade Center Medical Monitoring & Treatment Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, have been studying 28,252 rescue workers who worked the pile at Ground Zero, have found eight cases of multiple myeloma, a hematological cancer. Myeloma is a common disease found in elderly people, average age 71. But what the doctors find alarming is this cancer is appearing in rescue workers younger than age 45. Now, questions are being raised whether the toxic environment at Ground Zero may be linked to these cancers. To date, no study has been created to monitor cancer rates amongst civilians and rescue workers exposed to 9/11 toxic dust.

(I think it's amazing that for the past 8 years, NYC Mayor Mike Bloomburg, and other officials, have denied the link between these illnesses and the toxic dust of 9/11. And considering that Mount Sinai Hospital reports 70% of the 40,000 rescue workers who worked at the WTC are now ill, maybe it's time to take a closer look) ~ AA

The First Responders: NYPD & 9/11

I thought this video would be a good way to introduce myself.
